VIPs and Politicians = Kingpins?

I found this is in Malaysia-Today and puzzled a little. Of course I must commend the Sarawak Malaysian Police for a real good job but at the same time I read with curiosity that this Kingpins have close links to VIPs and politicians in the State. Meaning, close links would mean a 'friendly relationship' with VIPs and politicians. This is very crude. I call on the police to investigate further and reveal this VIPs and politicians whom I may believe also are on the take to do a cover for these Kingpins. Something has and must be done, to see that Sarawak is free from gangsterism.

-------

MALAYSIAN police have arrested 1,310 people since they launched a crackdown on criminal gangs in Sarawak on April 2, a senior police officer said yesterday.

The New Straits Times reported yesterday that the mass arrests followed the break-up of 17 criminal gangs in Ops Cantas Kenyalang.

Among those nabbed were some 40 gangland kingpins and their right-hand men, who allegedly have close links to VIPs and politicians in the state.

The director of the Federal Crime Investigation Department, Datuk Christopher Wan Soo Kee, said his men had acted on tip-offs from members of the public to nail the suspects, who included a few foreigners.

The gangs were involved in prostitution, gambling, rioting, extortion and criminal intimidation and violence in Sarawak.

Residents complained that gangs were terrorising and extorting them and controlling trade, including the prices of such daily necessities as eggs.

Datuk Wan said that among the 1,310 people arrested, about 680 have been charged with various offences including gang-related activities. The rest are still under investigation.

Eight suspects had also been detained under Malaysia's Emergency Ordinance, which allows for detention without trial.

Police are also investigating the busted gangs' alleged links to politicians and businessmen.

Datuk Wan vowed: 'Whoever has any activities linked to gangsterism, definitely we will take action.'
